Items like DVD players, video game consoles, toys and games are vital to our Child Life Department - a unique team of trained specialists who work to make hospitalization a positive and less stressful experience for all. The Child Life staff helps children understand and cope with the hospital stay. They provide play opportunities for the patients in the play areas and diversionary activities at bedside.

IV Pole with Roller Blade Wheels

Most children require an IV Pole with Roller Blade Wheels during most of their stay. IV Poles are used throughout various areas of the hospital. The roller blade wheels allow patients to easily move around the hospital even though they have an attached IV.

Wheelchair

Wheelchairs are essential to all departments of Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. A wheelchair may be the only mode of transportation for some patients, allowing them freedom outside of their rooms. Patients can be transported to all areas of the hospital including the playrooms and outdoors.

E-Stim/Ultrasound Combo Unit

The E-Stim/Ultrasound Unit serves electrotherapy and ultrasound needs. It also delivers a comprehensive range of therapies in a single, state-of-the-art unit to our comprehensive Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialty. Because their bodies are growing, children require different coaching, conditioning and medical care than more mature athletes. In particular, uneven growth areas in children leave young athletes more susceptible to injury. And when children focus on just one sport, they often incur injuries caused by excessive, repetitive stress on immature muscle-bone units. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialty use a multidisciplinary approach of treatment, rehabilitation, education and prevention.

Cardiac Patient Bed

No matter what type of cardiac care a child needs, the Congenital Heart Institute at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children provides the most sophisticated technology and procedures available anywhere. This means quicker recovery times, shorter hospital stays, fewer hospital visits, a better outcome, and ultimately - better health. There are only 20 congenital heart centers in the United States; Arnold Palmer Hospital has the distinction of being a partner in one of them alongside Miami Children's Hospital. The goal is to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art cardiac program serving patients across Florida, the Southeast and the world. The current Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is the space that was vacated when the Pediatric ICU moved to the newly constructed unit in 2006. As a result the area will undergo a redesign of the in-patient area to include a total of 14 beds and a step down unit. In 2008 Arnold Palmer Hospital was accompanied by Miami Children's Hospital in U.S. News & World Report's coveted Top 30 pediatric hospitals for heart care and heart surgery.

GameReady™ Control Unit

This simple joint icing device has revolutionized the treatment of sports injuries, and is one of the critical tools used by our growing Pediatric Sports Medicine Program. More and more kids are playing sports these days, and doing so at younger ages. With activity comes the risk of injury. Because their bodies are growing, children require different coaching, conditioning and medical care than more mature athletes. Our Pediatric Sports Medicine team uses a multidisciplinary approach of treatment, rehabilitation, education and prevention, spreading their expertise throughout our community to keep our kids “in the game” well into their adult years.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Machine

The Ambulatory Blood Pressure Machine is used specifically for children being treated for kidney disease. Last year, Arnold Palmer Hospital treated more than 300 children with kidney disease. Central Florida lacks an exclusive pediatric inpatient and outpatient dialysis center. Our vision is to create a comprehensive Kids’ Kidney Center that will serve as a medical home for these complex cases. Integrating inpatient and outpatient End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) services ensures continuity of care and improves clinical and psychosocial outcomes for children.

Broselow® Cart with Defibrillator

Equipment such as a Broselow® Cart is a critical part of the Pediatric Emergency Department and Trauma Center. When a child is brought into the trauma center, he/she is measured. The drawers are color coded by height, so the clinical team can easily determine which drawer contains the appropriate measurement of meds and equipment for the patient. Time in a trauma center is critical and the Broselow® Cart’s ease saves precious seconds.

Incubator

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Winnie Palmer Hospital is capable of the highest level of care for high-risk newborns. More than 26,000 babies have been successfully treated since the unit opened in 1975. Our NICU consistently demonstrates the best outcome statistics in Florida for low birth-weight babies. Our NICU is the fourth largest in the country, offering 112 beds. The entire third floor of the hospital is dedicated to this very special service - providing services for Level I, II, and III NICU babies.

Medical Simulators NOELLE™ & HAL®

NOELLE and HAL are medical simulators that allow our doctors and nurses at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies to train for almost any mother and baby emergencies. For instance we are able to rush NOELLE and her newborn HAL from an accident scene to the Emergency Department, the delivery room, or the newborn intensive care unit while simulating various medical complications. NOELLE and HAL are able to respond to treatments based on the staff’s reactions. This type of training is invaluable to our caregivers, so when the unexpected does happen, we are ready.

Long Stay Infusion Treatment Room

There are three large Long Stay Infusion Treatment Rooms in the newly renovated Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders. These rooms play a critical role in both the physical and emotional care of our young cancer patients. Various procedures will be done in these rooms. These rooms will also be use when children require isolation or are receiving end of life treatment. These rooms offer privacy and ensure dignity instead of receiving treatment in the open bay area in front of other children and adults. The Infusion Treatment Rooms will be furnished with a bed and a chair for a parent to remain with the child during their procedure. There will also be a large, flat-screen television and a projector which will display comforting murals on the wall. Typically, young patients will enjoy these diversions while recovering from sedation. At Arnold Palmer Hospital, we believe strongly that children should have a "safe place" free from the worries of procedures. When in their rooms, they can relax and feel comfortable knowing that they are free simply to rest and play.

Level III NICU Mini-Cluster

Level III NICU babies are the most critical, often the tiniest, and in need of the most care. This is the level of care that sets our NICU apart. We are able to care for these tiny babies with incredible expertise and compassion. Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies offers six semi-private rooms in a 14-bed cluster. Along with 2 isolation rooms, these 6 semi-private rooms allow two families to spend as much time as needed with their child while they develop and grow.

Sebastian's Story

Making sure Sebastian’s heart beats the odds.

Before Sebastian was born, a routine ultrasound detected something wrong with his heart. For a detailed diagnosis while still in the womb, Sebastian was examined by a pediatric cardiologist at the Congenital Heart Institute at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Miami Children’s Hospital. The examination revealed Sebastian had hypoplastic left heart syndrome and would require surgery for a chance to survive. At only 2 days old, Sebastian underwent the first of three open-heart surgeries to repair his heart defect. Thanks to his pediatric cardiac surgery team and a strong will to survive, Sebastian is well on his way to having a healthy heart and healthy childhood.
